A long walk on the beach is certainly a beautiful hike at Rancho Gaspareño®, but a trek through the desert is equally spectacular. Desert Mountain Hiking is best in the winter, with comfortable temperatures in the ‘70’s. Summer hiking in Baja is possible but early morning is the best time to hit the trail. One of several highly recommended hikes is to the waterfalls you will find just up the Arroyo, north of Rancho Gaspareño® along the property line, approximately 1 ½ miles by horseback, hike or ATV. The falls, called cascadas, can be viewed by taking a gentle uphill hike through a dry river bed with a maze of boulders and rock formations on each side. At the top you will discover pools of clear water. Take bathing suits and a picnic lunch and enjoy a day at this remote location. The trail continues on to a seriously challenging hike that goes through the mountains to the Sea of Cortez. Serious preparation and a guide are recommended. The southern tip of the Baja Peninsula is about 1085 miles from the U.S./Mexico border and contains three major mountain ranges; Sierra Juarez, Sierra de San Pedro Martir, and Sierra de la Giganta. They are all part of the Pacific Crest, which includes some of the most famous National Parks in the world including Denali and Yosemite, the Sierra Laguna is the southernmost range of the Crest system and one of the least exploited natural environments left in Mexico. Designated as an endangered and protected biosphere.
